Antioxidants are important for the body's immune system and to protect the body against free radical attacks. Consistent sex differences were found only for current smoking and CRP, which showed a stronger association with high oxidative stress levels (defined by d-ROMs levels) in men than in women (Additional file 1 : Table S7) and for high age (70-85 years), which was more strongly associated with high oxidative stress levels (defined by TTL) in women than in men (Additional file 1 : Table S8).

In effort to trace the impact of a single antioxidant, vitamin C, James E. Enstrom, an epidemiologist at the School of Public Health at the University of California in Los Angeles, and his co-workers recently reported on a 10-year study of 11,348 people ages 25 to 74. The researchers found that men who ate abundant amounts of vitamin C, taking in an average of 300 milligrams a day through a combination of food and supplements, had a 42 percent lower death rate during the period of the study than men with a low intake of the nutrient.

Oxidative stress is defined as a disturbance in the balance between the production of free radicals and antioxidant defense, and the later is more compensatory 14 Our observed increase of GSH may be a compensation increase to scavenge excessive superoxides and protect cells against oxidative stress.

Testing from the National Measurement Institute (NMI) has revealed that many Australian sunscreen and cosmetic products still contain anatase titanium dioxide, despite years of warnings of its extreme potential to generate free radicals which could damage DNA and protein.

ROS can arbitrarily react with lipids, proteins and nucleic acids causing oxidative stress and damage in these macromolecules leading to pathogenesis of age-related and chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic inflammation, neurodegenerative disorders and cancers 15,17-19.
